Sunday, November 6, 2011, 9:16am MST
by Patrick O’Grady, Reporter

Anyone watching Groupon’s initial public offering on Friday jump more than 50 percent has to be feeling pretty good about technology stock deals on the horizon.

Industry experts on a panel at the Invest Southwest Captial Conference in Phoenix on Thursday, a day before Groupon hit the open market, said the scattered nature of IPOs in the past year make trying to determine how tech stocks will do challenging at best.

Basically, don’t judge the next one by the last one.

“There will be a lot of junk,” said David Grove, managing director of Pacific Crest Securities in San Francisco. “It’s up to people to pick and choose.”

That challenge is that investors like growth and profitability, and some of the tech companies that have come through lately, such as LinkedIn.com and Zillow.com, have teased investors with both and resulted in higher prices, Grove said.

It has created a lot of talk about whether Web 2.0 companies are in another bubble.

“Here in the U.S., we’re always in a bubble,” said Peter Lombard, managing director of technology, media and telecommunications for Piper Jaffery.

The challenge for those looking at IPOs is how significantly the market has changed. Large private equity companies have stepped in where IPOs initially would have been held, pumping tens of millions to billions into companies that normally would have sought that on the open market.

That has led to a market that focuses on getting a company read for a sale rather than taking it public, said James Montgomery, CEO at Montgomery & Co.

Michael Franson, co-founder and president of St. Charles Capital, said it may not be the best time for companies to explore an IPO given rules for public companies such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 that tightened requirements on public companies.

“I see just a great set of conditions for mergers and acquisitions,” he said. “It’s a little different for the IPO market.”

That all may change next year. Facebook, which is always rumored to be going public, could find itself in the IPO market after getting billions from private equity firms to fuel its growth. Other companies may be in the offing as well.
